WHY AND HOW TO USE A KONJAC SPONGE

nighttime skincare routine order

Exfoliating your skin is so important but many people don't incorporate it into their skin care routine. When old skin cells start to accumulate on the surface of your skin, your skin may look dull, dry, and rough. When we fail to exfoliate, these dead skin cells can cause clogged pores, leading to blemishes and acne. There are several ways to exfoliate your skin, one of them being facial scrubs, which is preferred by many. However, most facial scrubs on the market contain harmful toxins that are not safe for you or your family's health. You know we've always got you covered in terms of natural and organic skincare, even with exfoliating! If you're wanting something that does the trick, is safe to use, and is inexpensive, the Konjac Sponge is exactly what you need!

Aloe Konjac Sponge

Why Should I Use a Konjac Sponge?

The Konjac Sponge is made from the Konjac potato, which is a perennial plant native to Asia. It is completely organic, 97% water, and rich in minerals. Unlike facial brushes that are made of plastic or require batteries, the Konjac is completely biodegradable!

It doesn't contain any chemicals, coloring, additives, or irritants (which we are all about). The Konjac Sponge has actually been used for over 1,500 years in China, Korea, and Japan as food, a dieting aid, medicine, and a beauty aid. It was originally created for delicate baby skin, so it is extremely gentle on the skin.

If that doesn't have you convinced, some of the benefits are:

  • 100% Natural Vegetable Fiber
  • Packed with Minerals & Antioxidants
  • Non-toxic
  • Earth-Friendly
  • Naturally Sustainable
  • 100% Additive-Free
  • 100% Free from Impurities and Pollutants

All About Our Konjac Sponges. We carry two types of Konjac Sponge: Aloe & Bamboo Charcoal. The Aloe Konjac Sponge has soothing and claming skin benefits and refreshes your skin's natural appearance. The Charcoal Konjac Sponge is better for someone who is prone to blemishes or oily skin. Charcoal contains activated carbon and various minerals that are great at removing excess oil and fighting acne-causing bacteria.

How Do I Use a Konjac Sponge?

When you take your Konjac Sponge out of the package, you will definitely be surprised with how hard it is. You may not even think it would be a good option as an exfoliator, but trust us, all it needs is some water!

If you're in the shower, you will want to hold the sponge under the water until it becomes plump and soft, about 30 seconds. If you are at the sink, hold it under warm, running water.

It will become SUPER soft!

You will want to be gentle with the sponge as it is an organic substance and the fibers are prone to wear and tear.

Once you wet your sponge, you will want to use the flat side on your skin. You will get the most out of your sponge if you use it in a circular massaging motion around your face. Because they are highly absorptive, when it is saturated with water, its surface is covered by an aqueous layer which forms a barrier between the sponge and your skin. Hence, the skin is never in direct contact with the fibers. This greatly reduces the risk of any skin damage or irritation from excess exfoliation.

Do I Use a Konjac Sponge Alone or with a Cleanser?

The Konjac Sponge can be used as is, but also works great with a cleanser, in this case, one of our Foaming Face Washes (either normal/combo or acne prone) or our Charcoal Face Bar.

If you use it in conjunction with your face wash, it is great at removing makeup and the excess oil that comes with the end of the day.

How Do I Store My Konjac Sponge?

Once you are finished using your Konjac Sponge, rinse it off under cool running water and gently squeeze in your hand to remove any makeup or dirt that may be on the surface of the sponge. We suggest, if you are able, to gently squeeze the sponge by pressing it between your palms. Make sure to not twist, wring, or pull on the sponge, as it may damage it.

Once you are done removing excess water, you will want to hang it to dry by its string, or put it on a rack so there's airflow. Alternately, you can keep the sponge in a sealed container in your fridge. Regardless of what you do, it is best to keep it away from light and humidity, as it will deteriorate quicker in those situations.

How Do I Know When it's Time to Get a New Konjac Sponge?

Because of the Konjac Sponge being made from Organic material, it will start to deteriorate after about 2-3 months of use. You will know it is time to replace it when it doesn't expand properly and the bottom looks rough and disintegrated.

Even though your Konjac Sponge may have served its time as your facial exfoliator, it still has so much potential! You can compost your Konjac Sponge since it is 100% natural material and earth friendly. You could even put it in the bottom of a potted plant to help retain moisture in the soil. How many facial exfoliators can you do that with? Yeah, the Konjac Sponge is pretty awesome.
