When certain substances are applied to the skin, including citrus ingredients found in skincare products (where a large source of Vitamin C comes from), they can make the skin more vulnerable to sunburn and damage from UV radiation. This is because citrus ingredients, such as lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit extracts or essential oils, contain compounds called furocoumarins, specifically bergapten and psoralen, which can increase the skin's photosensitivity.

When furocoumarins come into contact with the skin and are exposed to UV light, they can trigger a phototoxic reaction. This reaction manifests as an exaggerated response to sunlight, resulting in symptoms like redness, inflammation, blistering, or even darkening of the affected skin. The severity of the reaction can vary depending on factors such as the concentration of furocoumarins, the duration of sun exposure, and an individual's skin sensitivity.
